Count it once and it stops being invisible
Track a month honestly: pulling numbers from four platforms, writing and swapping creative, adjusting budgets, chasing a vendor, reading a report, learning a new interface because something changed again.
For most owners running their own paid media it lands between eight and fifteen hours a month. At any reasonable value on your time, that is the largest line item in your marketing budget and it is not written down anywhere.
Attention is not the same as time
The hours are bad; the fragmentation is worse. Marketing tasks arrive in ten-minute interruptions across the week, and they land on the same attention you need for selling, hiring, and running jobs.
That is why so much of it gets done badly at 9pm. Not incompetence — scheduling.
The tuition line
Ad platforms are unforgiving to part-time operators. Defaults are set in the platform’s favour, the expensive mistakes are invisible, and you learn them by paying for them.
A month of learning on a $3,000 budget is a $3,000 lesson, and the lesson usually repeats.
What to keep
Keep the decisions: what you sell, to whom, for how much, in what area. Those are business judgments and nobody outside your business makes them better than you.
Delegate the operating: builds, monitoring, optimization, reporting. That work rewards daily attention and specialized tooling, which is exactly what you do not have spare.
