The compressed decision
Water is coming through the ceiling. The car will not start. A tooth is broken. From problem to phone call is minutes, and the process is: one search, glance at the top results, check a rating, call. Sometimes call two.
There is no consideration phase, no nurture sequence, no comparison spreadsheet. Whatever is not visible in that window is invisible.
What is inside the window
Paid search and local service ads at the top. Your map listing and star rating. A phone number that is one tap. Whether someone answers.
That is nearly the whole list. Your website design, your brand story, your social presence, and your email program are all outside it.
The three ways businesses lose it
Not being in the top results for urgent terms, because the budget went to broader awareness. In urgent categories, position is the campaign.
A rating that makes the buyer skip you during a twenty-second check.
Nobody answering. This is the biggest one by volume and it costs nothing to fix. In urgent categories a missed call is a lost customer, immediately, to the next number down.
For considered purchases, the window is different
A new roof or a kitchen takes weeks, and the equivalent moment is when the shortlist gets made. That is where reviews, examples of work, and clear pricing do the deciding.
The principle is the same: identify the moment your customer actually decides, and put your money and attention there rather than spreading it evenly across a journey diagram.
