The arithmetic
Revenue from advertising equals traffic multiplied by conversion rate multiplied by close rate multiplied by average job value.
Four terms. Traffic is the only one you buy, and it is the one everyone focuses on. The other three are operational, and improving any of them multiplies the value of every dollar you were already spending.
Lever one: conversion rate on your site
The share of visitors who call or submit. Most local sites sit in low single digits and could be several times that.
What moves it: phone number visible and tappable at the top of every page, a form with three fields instead of eight, load time under three seconds on a phone, and the offer from the ad repeated word for word on the page.
Doubling this is realistic and costs nothing per month afterwards.
Lever two: close rate on leads
The share of enquiries that become customers. Response speed dominates everything else here — minutes rather than hours changes outcomes dramatically.
Then: answering the phone during advertised hours, following up more than once, and having a clear price or range so the conversation is short.
Lever three: average job value
The least discussed and often the fastest. Bundling, tiered options, an obvious upgrade path, and a maintenance plan all raise the value of work you were already going to do.
A 20 percent increase here improves your tolerable cost per lead by 20 percent, which quietly makes every channel more viable — including the ones you concluded did not work.
The order to work in
Site conversion first, because it is cheap and permanent. Close rate second, because it is free and immediate. Job value third. Traffic last, because it is the only one you have to keep paying for.
Almost every business does this in reverse.
